Under the title "Biden Administration 'Frightened' and Admits Major Mistake in Afghanistan," Sky News reported that in his recent speech regarding Afghanistan, U.S. President Joe Biden did not acknowledge making any mistakes during the chaotic withdrawal from the country, but behind the scenes, the situation appears quite different. The American outlet "Politico" quoted Biden administration officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they are "frightened" by how the withdrawal process unfolded.
They added that they do not view the mission as successful, contrary to Biden's public statements, where he claimed the mission was "extraordinarily successful" and could not have ended without chaos. One official stated, "I am extremely frightened and literally terrified that we left Americans behind," emphasizing, "We failed a mission that was intolerable to fail."
Another official mentioned that the evacuation of Americans cannot be described as complete, as some Americans remain in Afghanistan. Biden acknowledged that there are Americans who stayed in Afghanistan even after evacuation operations ended. He stated from the White House, "98 percent of Americans who wanted to leave Afghanistan were able to do so." He confirmed that the U.S. "remains committed to assisting the remaining Americans who wish to leave Afghanistan, numbering between 100 and 200."
Last week, 170 people were killed in a terrorist attack targeting Kabul airport, including 13 U.S. soldiers, marking the largest blow to U.S. forces in Afghanistan since 2011. The overwhelming chaos during the evacuation process has tarnished America's image globally, even among its allies. British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab stated on Wednesday that his country needs to develop its capabilities so that it can undertake military missions in the future independently of Washington.
