Al-Azhar's Grand Imam Ahmed Al-Tayeb has settled a legal debate regarding several contemporary issues concerning women. In a tweet, the Sheikh stated: "It is permissible for women to hold high positions, serve on courts, issue fatwas, and travel without a male guardian whenever it is safe." He added: "Arbitrary divorce without reason is forbidden and an immoral crime, and there is no such thing as the 'house of obedience' in Islam." Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb explained that "a guardian does not have the right to prevent a woman from marrying a suitable man whom she accepts without an acceptable reason," and he added, "Women have the right to specify a share of their husband's wealth if they contributed to its growth."
