She shows signs of weakness and illness and speaks English fluently; these are some descriptions of a girl in Egypt who has become widely known as the "Girl from Hurghada," as she lived homeless on the streets of the coastal city after being rejected by her family. The story of Riham, or the "Girl from Hurghada," began when the Hurghada police department received reports from locals about a girl sleeping on the sidewalk in the city overlooking the Red Sea.
Immediately, the police coordinated with the Human Rights Department of the Red Sea Governorate and the National Council for Women to start searching for the girl, in order to understand her story and attempt to help her. Riham, or more accurately "the Girl from Hurghada," garnered attention on social media due to her actions, with some calling for her to be sheltered after her father refused to take her back, leading to a wave of outrage and condemnation.
The locals in Hurghada reported that they had contacted the girl’s family, but her mother refused to take her back, stating that she frequently runs away, and her father confirmed that she is mentally unstable. Mahmoud Wahid, director of the "We Are With You to Save a Human" organization, confirmed to Sky News Arabia that the organization welcomed the girl after taking all necessary legal actions, including filing a police report and conducting a medical examination.
The girl was transferred to a care home to provide her with full support until her health and psychological condition stabilize, especially since she is a student at Ain Shams University, to safeguard her and her future, according to the organization. The organization emphasized that Riham’s condition is receiving attention and care based on what mental health specialists determine as part of a treatment plan to help her return to her normal life and resume her studies at university.
In the end, the organization managed to reintegrate the student back into her studies at Ain Shams University after she received the appropriate health and psychological support.
