Social media users have circulated footage they claim documents part of the assassination of Haiti's President, Jovenel Moïse, at his residence early Wednesday morning. The "RT" network transmitted clips recorded by a surveillance camera, showing armed men with rifles in a street under the cover of night, capturing the sound of gunfire. The circumstances and location of these recordings could not be independently verified.
On Wednesday, acting Prime Minister of Haiti, Claude Joseph, announced the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse at his private residence. In a statement released early Wednesday, Joseph said, "Unknown assailants attacked the residence of the country's president, Jovenel Moïse, during the night and shot him dead, while the First Lady was injured during the attack," according to Reuters. He added that "Haiti will remain under the control of the police and armed forces, and all measures will be taken to ensure the continuity of the state and protect the nation."
President Jovenel Moïse had announced on Monday the appointment of Ariel Henry as Prime Minister, making him the seventh to hold the position in four and a half years. However, there will be no parliamentary approval for his appointment, as there is currently no parliament.
