A firefighter has made a plea to parents and guardians that could help save their children's lives, urging them to stop leaving their children's bedroom doors open while they sleep.
In a message sent to the Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department, a firefighter's Facebook page revealed how closing a child's bedroom door can make a significant difference in the event of a house fire.
The unnamed firefighter wrote, "As a parent, it's hard to convince young children to sleep with the door closed; they always want it slightly open. I do a lot of fire prevention work in schools, so one of the things I try to emphasize to children is how important it is to sleep with the doors closed."
He went on to explain how a fire recently broke out in a neighboring area, sharing images from the incident—one showing a burned black door and another showing the back of the door that remained undamaged. He noted, "The door shown in both pictures is the main door to the bedroom. While the front of the door was severely damaged, the closed door protected the bedroom and its contents. If this had been an occupied bedroom, the closed door could have saved the lives of the occupants."
The post quickly went viral, receiving over 5,000 shares, more than 1,000 likes, and hundreds of comments. Many people were surprised by the benefits of having a closed door, with one person writing, "I close my door so ghosts don't come into my room, but I'm glad to know there are other benefits to this." Another commented, "This is important information; I didn't know this before."
