Statement from the Minister of Defense Regarding Sodium Sulfide Container Discharge

The media office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Zina Akar announced that a statement has been issued concerning sodium sulfide.

The National News Agency reported that the statement, issued by the office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense in the caretaker government, Zina Akar, on January 20, 2021, permitted the discharge of containers arriving in Lebanon belonging to Lebanese importers after inspection and examination in the presence of the importing party. The statement emphasized that containers containing sodium sulfide should not be unloaded. It also stressed that no containers should be unloaded in the absence of the importing party.

The media office clarified that, according to information received from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, and to avoid any misunderstanding, the shipping company is MSC, which carried the containers aboard its vessel, which departed from Qingdao Port, China, through several other ports and vessels of the same company until it reached the Port of Piraeus in Greece, where the containers were transferred onto a new vessel belonging to MSC. This is evident in the shipping movements and the containers' paths as per the attached schedule.
