The German Heart Foundation has reported that extreme heat during summer poses serious risks for heart patients, as it increases the likelihood of circulatory collapse, sudden drops in blood pressure, or fatal heat strokes. The foundation emphasizes that patients should consult their physician immediately upon noticing symptoms such as exhaustion, impaired concentration, muscle cramps, or cardiac rhythm disturbances.
Additionally, the treating physician will adjust medication dosages and determine the appropriate amount of fluids, since excessive fluid intake can be dangerous for those suffering from heart failure.
It is also important to adequately supply the body with potassium, due to its significance for heart function and blood pressure regulation. Dietary sources of potassium include bananas, apricots, and plums. Moreover, heart patients should avoid exposure to direct sunlight, especially during midday, to prevent life-threatening heat strokes.
