New York Governor Declares State of Emergency Due to Monkeypox

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a state of emergency in the state due to the ongoing spread of monkeypox. Hochul wrote on Twitter late Friday night, "I declare a disaster emergency to bolster our ongoing efforts to combat the monkeypox outbreak." She added that more than one in four cases of the disease in the United States are located in New York. As of July 29, New York has recorded a total of 1,383 confirmed cases of monkeypox, according to the state's health department website. Brazil and Spain reported their first deaths related to monkeypox outside of Africa yesterday. The World Health Organization declared the disease a global health emergency last week, triggering its highest level of alert.
