The Indian Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Sadananda Gowda, revealed that medical authorities have recorded over 8,800 cases of a fungal disease known as "Mucormycosis" or "black fungus." The minister stated, "After a detailed analysis in various states of the country regarding the rising number of mucormycosis cases, a total of 23,680 vials of the antifungal substance Amphotericin-B have been allocated and distributed to all states today. This distribution is due to the increasing total number of those infected with this fungal disease, reaching 8,848 patients nationwide."

He noted that Gujarat is the region most affected by this disease, where 2,281 cases have been discovered. Patients with mucormycosis have also been identified in the states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. This rare fungal infection affects the sinuses or lungs after inhaling fungal bacteria, often found in damp rooms, surfaces, soil, decaying plants, vegetables, and fruits. Earlier, the Indian Ambassador to Russia, Datla Bala Venkatesh Varma, stated that Indian doctors are consulting with their Russian counterparts on possible treatments for mucormycosis.
