Medical reports indicate that half of those with diabetes suffer from arthritis. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead over time to joint pain, nerve damage, and other symptoms. If a patient does not receive effective treatment for diabetes, it can result in the collapse of the musculoskeletal system, including joint damage and reduced mobility.
Uncontrolled diabetes also causes changes in nerves and small blood vessels. Hand deformities may occur, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren's contracture, or tightening of the palms, as well as thickening of the skin on the fingers. Diabetic patients may also experience shoulder pain due to a frozen shoulder or rotator cuff tendonitis, which is a group of tendons that help stabilize and move the shoulder.
