The German Association of Pediatricians and Adolescents stated that hypothyroidism means a low production of thyroid hormones. The association explained that hypothyroidism in children is divided into two types: congenital and acquired. Congenital hypothyroidism occurs due to insufficient growth of the thyroid gland before birth or due to iodine deficiency during pregnancy. On the other hand, acquired hypothyroidism occurs after birth, for example, due to a condition known as "Hashimoto's thyroiditis" or undergoing radiation therapy.
Symptoms of hypothyroidism in children include weight gain, constant fatigue, constipation, slow physical and mental growth, and dry and rough hair and skin. Hypothyroidism in children is treated with hormone replacement therapy.
