An Iraqi security source reported on Sunday evening that three soldiers were killed in an armed attack by ISIS in Diyala Province, eastern Iraq. The source stated that the terrorist organization attacked a checkpoint with light and medium weapons in the town of Al-Azim, resulting in one soldier being injured, according to local media. Additionally, it was reported that an attack occurred in the village of Tal'ah on another checkpoint, which led to the death of three soldiers.
This came a day after three Iraqi military personnel were killed, and others were injured in a bombing attack carried out by ISIS elements in Nineveh Province (southeast). A police officer in the province, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated that "ISIS elements attacked the village of Al-Khatab, southeast of Mosul, using medium and light machine guns" on Saturday morning. The officer added that the forces were "ambushed by a bomb attack detonated by the assailants, leading to the deaths of two soldiers and a member of the local tribal forces, with four others sustaining various injuries."
Iraq declared its victory over ISIS in late 2017 after expelling the group from all the territories it had controlled since 2014. Since then, attacks by the organization in urban areas have significantly decreased, but Iraqi forces continue to pursue dormant cells in mountainous and desert regions, while the organization periodically targets military sites.
