After nearly 6 years since the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, Egypt was awarded a silver medal in weightlifting following the disqualification of a Kazakh lifter from his gold medal. Egyptian athlete Mohamed Ihab had originally won a bronze medal in the men's weightlifting event under 77 kilograms at the Rio 2016 Olympics. However, with the cancellation of the gold medal held by Kazakhstan's Nazarbayev Rahimov, Ihab's bronze was automatically upgraded to silver.
Rahimov was stripped of his gold medal from the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics and was banned for 8 years due to violations of doping regulations. The 28-year-old Rahimov had won the Olympic gold in the under 77 kilograms category, setting a world record at the time by lifting 214 kilograms. However, on Tuesday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled that Rahimov "tampered with his samples" on four occasions, stating that resorting to this method is against the rules. His 8-year ban is retroactive from January of this year, and all his results from March 2016 to January 2021 have been annulled.
