In a strongly worded message, Al-Azhar Al-Sharif promised the end of Israeli occupation of Jerusalem, describing the city as a captive. The Al-Azhar Sheikhdom stated through its official Facebook account that Jerusalem is not just occupied land, but a sacred sanctuary for both Islam and Christianity, and its issue is not merely a Palestinian national cause or an Arab national cause, but above all, an Islamic doctrinal issue.
It added, "Jerusalem was held captive by the Crusaders for more than twice the years it has been under the grip of Zionist aggression. Yet, the course of history— which never fails—will lead to the closing of the chapter of occupation and the removal of the effects of the aggressors on rights and sanctities.”
Many followers of Al-Azhar's Facebook account praised the stance of Al-Azhar and the Grand Imam Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayyeb. The Grand Imam Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayyeb had issued directives for the launch of the largest relief convoy from Al-Azhar to the Gaza Strip on Sunday, in solidarity with the brothers in Palestine and Gaza in light of the Israeli aggression faced by the region. Al-Azhar leaders participated, including Deputy Al-Azhar Dr. Muhammad Al-Dawwini, President of Al-Azhar University Dr. Muhammad Al-Mahrusawi, Secretary-General of the Islamic Research Academy Dr. Nazih Iyad, deputies of Al-Azhar University, and leaderships of the Al-Azhar Institute sector.
