Spanish coach Mikel Arteta of Arsenal has received threats targeting his family via social media.
The 38-year-old Spanish manager urged internet giants to make greater efforts to put an end to such abuses. "When it's personal against me, I can take it. When my family is involved it's a different story," Arteta stated regarding the social media abuse.
Arteta mentioned that he no longer uses his Twitter account after informing the club about the incident. He added, "I think that if we read everything that is written about us, we might need to stay in bed for several days."
He continued, "I believe we are all exposed to it on those platforms, which is why I prefer not to read, because it affects me personally much more the moment someone wants to target my family."
Arteta noted, "Since this happened, the club was aware, and we tried to do something about it. That's it. We have to live with it," because "it won’t stop tomorrow, we know that, but in the medium and long term, can we do something about it? That’s what I strive to achieve."
It is worth mentioning that Newcastle United coach Steve Bruce stated that he learned some social media users wanted him dead, while referee Mike Dean requested to be excused from officiating a Premier League match this weekend after receiving death threats against himself and his family.
