Engineer Trapped Under Quad Bike Rescued Thanks to Pen

A British engineer was rescued after being trapped under a quad bike in a remote area, having dug a small hole with his pen to access his mobile phone for help.

Iwan Lindsey, 47, dug around his pocket to reach his phone to call emergency services and told the operator, "I've lost my arm," before losing consciousness. Iwan had been trapped under the 650 kg quad bike for over three hours after it overturned while he was driving on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. He was 100 miles away from the nearest hospital and in an area inaccessible by road, but rescue workers found him and managed to save his arm.

Iwan said, "When I was there alone, I thought I was definitely going to die. But I'm still alive. In the end, all the nerve endings in my arm stopped working, so I'll need long-term rehabilitation, but I want to thank the emergency services as soon as I am fit and healthy again."

Iwan's rescue was made possible by the Scottish Trauma Network, launched in 2017 to provide emergency services to those living in remote areas of the country. The service responds to around 5,000 calls daily, with many calls coming from patients who have suffered trauma in some of the most challenging landscapes, according to The Sun.
