The National Security Council in Ethiopia accused internal and external forces on Saturday of attempting to threaten the country's stability, asserting that such pressures will not prevent the filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam or the holding of elections.
A statement from the Ethiopian National Security Council, issued by the Prime Minister's office, indicated that unidentified internal and external forces seek to plunge the country into conflict and chaos. The council emphasized during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed that, "Despite the conspiracies and pressures exerted upon us, we will proceed with the second filling of the dam on schedule and conduct the elections."
The statement added that these plans, aimed at destroying the country by supporting groups opposed to peace, will pose significant challenges but will not overcome Ethiopia.
Corrective Actions Against Internal Forces
The Ethiopian statement noted that the government will take several corrective measures against the internal forces present everywhere, including within the government, that implement external schemes, pointing out that the government's choice is to confront and halt these conspiratorial attempts by cleansing elements opposed to peace.
It affirmed that Ethiopia is committed to ensuring peaceful, democratic, and fair elections in general; completing the construction of the dam; and carrying out the second phase of the dam’s filling, highlighting that these external forces know that if Ethiopia succeeds in overcoming all these challenges, it will become a regionally influential state.
The statement called on the Ethiopian people to stand by the government with vigilance and cooperation in countering these attempts aimed at obstructing Ethiopia's development.
This comes as Washington recently announced the appointment of Jeffrey Feltman as the U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, confirming that the issue of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam will be among his priorities.
