British newspapers reported that Prime Minister Boris Johnson "nearly drowned" in the sea during a family summer holiday in Scotland last year. The Times wrote that the Prime Minister spent some time on the northwest coast of the Highlands with his then-fiancée, Carrie Symonds, and their son Wilfred.
The newspaper cited informed sources stating that Johnson at one point needed rescue after being swept out to sea. It reported that he was pulled from the water while kayaking. A source for the paper noted, "He was swept away and found himself going further and further out."
According to the report, the Prime Minister's personal security team was monitoring the situation from the shore and considered calling a rescue helicopter. The newspaper confirmed that Johnson was ultimately able to paddle back halfway, but his security officers had to swim alongside him to assist him the rest of the way.
The source added, "Everything was fine in the end, but it could have been a disaster." It is mentioned that Johnson is a reasonably strong swimmer.
