Efforts to Impeach Outgoing President Donald Trump

Reports on Tuesday indicate that the Democratic minority leader in the Senate is considering invoking emergency measures to convene the chamber before the 19th of the month.

According to the Washington Post, the move aims to hold a vote on the impeachment of outgoing President Donald Trump. The newspaper states that Democrats are looking to move the impeachment to the Senate Judiciary Committee instead of the general council. The Washington Post also reported that President-elect Joe Biden informed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that he will focus on his duties after inauguration and will leave it to her to handle the impeachment, adding that White House officials currently have no plan for dealing with a potential impeachment of Trump. The newspaper noted that Donald Trump's senior advisor Jared Kushner has urged allies in the Senate to argue that there is not enough time to conduct the impeachment. This comes as House Democrats are encouraging Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to remove Trump from office before the 20th of the month, the day Biden is set to take power.
