The Egyptian national football team qualified for the quarterfinals of the football competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after defeating Australia 2-0 in the final match of Group C today (Wednesday), according to Reuters.
Egypt raised its points to four, securing second place, ahead of Argentina on goal difference, which drew 1-1 with group leader Spain, who finished with five points. Australia placed fourth and last with three points, bowing out of the tournament.
Egypt is set to face Brazil, the leader of Group D, in the quarterfinals next Saturday, while Spain will meet Ivory Coast on the same day.
Ahmed Yasser Rayan gave Egypt the lead in the 44th minute after a brilliant run by Ramadan Sobhi from the left side, who skillfully passed the ball back to Rayan, who found the net.
Amar Hamdi doubled the lead five minutes before the end after a superb play by substitute Nasser Mansi, who weaved through the defense and shot, prompting the goalkeeper to parry the attempt, allowing Hamdi to slot the rebound into the goal.
The crossbar denied Hamdi a goal in the 70th minute following a pass from Sobhi, as he failed to capitalize on the rebound, missing a crucial chance.
