Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan stated that Lebanon must demonstrate stronger signals of its seriousness about reforms in order to gain the support of the international community as it faces a financial crisis. During the Munich Security Conference, Prince Faisal said, "Lebanon first needs to take vigorous action to save itself... We need a stronger signal from the Lebanese political elite that they are moving seriously (toward reform)." He added that this includes working to support and stabilize the economy, addressing issues of corruption and mismanagement, as well as "regional intervention and the loss of state sovereignty."
Prince Faisal remarked, "If there is a genuine initiative to reform the economic structure and the governance structure, and to reform the way the economy is managed, then you can invite regional countries to provide all forms of support," referring to economic and technical support as well as developmental aid. He emphasized that "short-term remedies" would not benefit Lebanon, which has plunged into a severe financial crisis since 2019 under the weight of massive public debts, causing the local currency to lose 90% of its value and pushing a majority of the country's population into poverty.
