A recent study led by the University of Göttingen has shown that voice can reveal certain personality traits. Researchers discovered that a lower-pitched voice is associated with higher levels of dominance and openness, both socially and sexually, indicating a welcoming attitude toward casual relationships. These findings were consistent for both women and men. The results were published in the journal "Research in Personality" and reported by the website "Science Daily."
However, the relationship between voice pitch and other personality traits, such as agreeableness, neuroticism (the tendency toward negative emotions), conscientiousness, or openness appears to be weaker, and voice pitch may not accurately reflect these traits. The researchers found no significant differences between men and women in this regard.
Yulia Stern, from the biological personality psychology group at the University of Göttingen, explains that "voices can leave a significant and immediate impression, even when we hear someone's voice without any visual cues, such as over the phone. We can instantly recognize if we are speaking to a man, a woman, a child, or an elder. We can also discern if the voice is interested, friendly, sad, tense, or if it is an attractive voice."
