US President Joe Biden announced on Saturday that although former President Donald Trump was acquitted of the charge of "incitement of insurrection" regarding the violent events that took place at the Capitol on January 6, the allegations against him are not in dispute and that the attack shows that "democracy is fragile."
After Trump's acquittal, Biden stated, "While the final vote did not lead to a conviction, the essence of the charge is not contested." He added, "This sad chapter in our history reminds us that democracy is fragile. It must always be defended. We must remain vigilant at all times."
In response to the acquittal of former President Trump, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi remarked, "What we saw today was a cowardly group of Republicans." She directed her comments toward the Republicans who voted to acquit Trump, saying: "He stands there and issues this indictment against the president and then says I can't vote for it because it comes after the fact."
Pelosi further stated, "As for Mitch McConnell... this position would not have been heard from him before January 20 in the Senate." She continued, "What we saw today in the Senate was a cowardly group of Republicans who apparently have no options because they were afraid to defend their job and the institution they serve."
She considered McConnell's statement that Trump is still criminally or civilly responsible for his actions while in office as "misleading rhetoric."
