Taiwan's President to Pelosi: The Island Will Not Back Down Against Threats

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi confirmed her country's solidarity with Taiwan on Wednesday, stating that "it is more important now than ever." She expressed her pride in being in Taipei. Pelosi informed Taiwan's President that Washington pledged to support Taipei 43 years ago and that her visit reaffirms that commitment.

The U.S. delegation, led by Pelosi, visited Taiwan to make it abundantly clear that the United States will not abandon Taiwan. During a meeting with Taiwanese Vice President Tsai Chi-chang, she declared that her delegation came to Taiwan for "peace in the region," following a visit that sparked anger in Beijing and triggered a diplomatic storm. Pelosi stated, "We come to Taiwan out of friendship and peace for the region."

In turn, Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen thanked Pelosi on Wednesday for her tangible support for Taipei during this critical moment, insisting that the island will not retreat in the face of increasing military threats. Tsai told Pelosi that she is one of Taiwan's most loyal friends and expressed gratitude for her steadfast support on the international stage.

Tsai added that Taiwan is a reliable partner to the United States and will continue to work with it to enhance cooperation in security, economic development, and supply chains. Pelosi arrived in Taiwan late Tuesday on a visit that defies China's threats, making her the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit since her predecessor Newt Gingrich in 1997, amid China's claim that Taiwan is part of its territory.

Regarding the meeting, both leaders reinforced their commitment to working together amid the escalating tensions, with Tsai reaffirming Taiwan's position as a trustworthy ally to the U.S.
