U.S. President Joe Biden is set to host a virtual summit on COVID-19 next Wednesday, bringing together world leaders. This anticipated summit, which focuses on the COVID-19 pandemic, will occur the day after his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, according to a statement from the White House.
U.S. presidential spokeswoman Jen Psaki stated that "this meeting is about expanding and strengthening our collective efforts to defeat COVID-19," as well as seeking "to agree on a common vision" against the virus. Psaki noted that the summit will be held "on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly," as reported by AFP.
Biden is scheduled to deliver a speech at the annual United Nations meeting on Tuesday. In her statement, the U.S. presidential spokeswoman mentioned that the summit will build on previous gatherings "of world leaders and ministers in forums such as the G7 and G20 summits... to agree on a common vision to defeat COVID-19 together," according to AFP. The United States is the largest donor of vaccines worldwide, and Biden has compared his government's efforts in this regard to the U.S. military's involvement in World War II.
