"The Indian Nightingale": The Passing of Singing Legend Lata Mangeshkar After COVID-19 Complications

The Indian singing legend, Lata Mangeshkar, passed away today, Sunday, at the age of 92 due to complications from the coronavirus. Lata was admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Mumbai after contracting the virus, which led to pneumonia. Her doctor recommended that she remain under observation for 10-12 days, but she died today due to complications.

Lata is known as "The Indian Nightingale" and recorded songs for over 1,000 films in multiple languages. She received three National Film Awards, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and the Bharat Ratna, among other honors.

Her real name was Hema Hardikar, and she was the daughter of singer and stage actor Dinnanaas Hardikar, a star of the 1930s and 1940s, who later changed the family name to Mangeshkar. He also changed Hema's name to Lata, and Lata inherited her love for singing and the arts from her father. Singing was her first and only passion. Her mother was Ms. Shivanti, who was the sister of Dinnanaas's first wife.
