The German Association of Pediatricians and Adolescents stated that using computers for gaming, browsing the internet, and social media has become part of daily life for children and youth today. The association added that excessive computer use can turn into addiction, which parents can recognize by observing warning signs such as loss of control, meaning an inability to determine the duration of use, as well as feelings of tension and irritability if the child is deprived of computer access.
Symptoms of computer addiction also include neglecting studies, personal hygiene, hobbies, and social relationships, as well as irregular sleep patterns.
If these symptoms are noticed, parents should talk to the child and agree on specific guidelines for computer use, while also encouraging the child to engage in alternative activities like sports and their favorite hobbies.
If these measures are not successful, it is advisable to consult a psychologist to address computer addiction through behavioral therapy.
