Syrian sailor Mohamed Aisha announced on his Twitter account that his ordeal has ended and he has reunited with his family after spending a long time on an abandoned ship in Egyptian waters. Mohamed Aisha wrote in his post: "Finally, after 4 years, home with my family again." The Syrian sailor shared a series of tweets expressing gratitude to those who helped him overcome his hardship.
Mohamed found himself legally responsible for a ship that was seized by the Egyptian authorities in 2017 due to expired certifications, after he signed to be its legal custodian. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Mohamed did not leave the abandoned ship during those years, except occasionally going to the shore to get food. Mohamed expects to receive compensation from the ship's owning company as the custodian for the damage he suffered due to this situation, following the ship's sale at auction.
