UAE Approves New Vaccine for COVID-19

The Ministry of Health and Prevention has announced the approval for the emergency use of a "new recombinant protein-based vaccine" from Sinopharm CNBG. The ministry confirmed that this emergency use of the vaccine is fully compliant with regulations and laws that allow for faster review of licensing procedures, as part of the ministry’s comprehensive efforts in collaboration with health authorities to enhance community protection against the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

The study included participants who had previously been vaccinated with two doses of the inactive Sinopharm CNBG vaccine against COVID-19, and recorded a seroconversion rate of up to 100 percent of neutralizing antibodies, along with high safety rates and the absence of serious side effects among all participants.

The ministry clarified that the vaccine exhibited improved immune capability against the emerging variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, with high safety rates allowing for quick production as well as ease of storage and distribution. The study conducted in the UAE showed an immune response against the emerging variants of the virus among volunteers who had previously received two doses of the inactive Sinopharm CNBG vaccine, as reported by the Emirates News Agency "WAM".

The ministry revealed its approval for the manufacturing and distribution of the new vaccine by Hayat Biotech, a joint venture between Sinopharm CNBG and G42, with the vaccine expected to be available to the public as a booster dose starting early 2022, as part of measures taken to contain the spread of the virus. Reports indicate that the UAE has one of the highest COVID-19 vaccination rates in the world, with over 22 million doses administered as of December 23, 2021.
