The chief expert on infectious diseases in the United States, Anthony Fauci, has warned of a "savage variant" of the coronavirus that could start spreading in the future at a frightening pace. In an interview with MSNBC, Fauci noted that the new variant may make the Delta variant seem weak by comparison. Fauci explained, "As the spread of the coronavirus increases in the community, we will get enough new mutations to form a variant completely different from those we see now." He emphasized that this is why vaccination is important, as COVID-19 vaccines will help stop the spread of the new variant and eliminate potentially dangerous mutations. In August, several scientists told Newsweek that there is a "hellish variant of the coronavirus" that could be worse than the Delta variant, which is currently considered the most dangerous due to its rapid spread. Eric Feil, director of molecular pathology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, said, "I would not be surprised if another variant emerges that is more transmissible than Delta."
