The German Association of Ophthalmologists stated that yellowing of the eyes can have several causes, such as jaundice, hepatitis A, B, and C, acute pancreatitis, and malaria. The association added that yellowing of the eyes may also indicate liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, or gallbladder cancer. Additionally, it can be attributed to a rare genetic disorder that negatively affects how the liver processes bilirubin.
The association emphasized the necessity of consulting a doctor immediately upon noticing yellowing of the eyes, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as yellowing of the skin, itching, light-colored stool, dark-colored urine, bloating, fatigue, fever, nausea, and sudden weight loss.
Treatment is determined based on the underlying cause revealed by medical examinations, while supporting liver health through the intake of liver-friendly foods such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, and lean proteins, while reducing harmful foods and beverages for the liver, such as sugar, salt, fats, and alcohol.
