The National Gendarmerie Brigade in Sebdou, northwestern Algeria, has detained a criminal gang that was distributing donkey and mule meat to some commercial shops, passing it off as beef. The investigations by the Algerian security forces followed reports about several individuals engaging in illegal activities originating from a clandestine slaughterhouse located in "Village De Gaulle."
The area was described as filled with foul odors, and upon obtaining a judicial order to search the location, investigators from the Gendarmerie, in coordination with officials from the Directorate of Commerce, raided the alleged slaughterhouse. Inside, they discovered remains of slaughtered donkeys and mules, along with their heads, indicating the practice of illegal slaughter of animals unfit for human consumption.
In the same location, a vast amount of equipment used for slaughtering donkeys and processing their meat was seized to mislead customers into believing it was beef. Following the investigations, seven individuals were arrested, while four remain at large. The suspects were presented to the Public Prosecutor at the Sebdou Court for the crime of trading in donkey and mule meat and directing it for human consumption through illegal means.
