Death of a Climber in Nepal at an Altitude of 7,400 Meters

A Greek climber died on Tuesday while descending from the summit of Dhaulagiri Mountain in Nepal, which stands at 8,170 meters, as announced by the organizers of his expedition. Antonios Sikaris, 59, passed away just a day after posting a photo on Instagram from the summit of Dhaulagiri, the seventh highest mountain in the world. Sikaris felt unwell while descending from the peak, and his condition quickly deteriorated. Guide Mingma Sherpa told AFP that Sikaris "died at an altitude of 7,400 meters." Sikaris was an experienced climber who had previously reached five other peaks exceeding eight thousand meters, according to his website. His death marks the first recorded fatality of the spring season in the Himalayas, during a season that attracts hundreds of climbers to Nepal each year. Nepali authorities have issued climbing permits for 530 individuals this season, including 204 permits specifically for climbing Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world.
