Multiple studies have found that fruits can help us lower blood pressure levels more effectively than reducing salt intake. Researchers noted that consuming both bananas and citrus fruits can help significantly reduce blood pressure levels.
This is due to their high potassium content. A recent study concluded that elevated potassium levels might be more important than lowering salt intake for maintaining low blood pressure. The findings came from an analysis of data from 3,303 participants in a cardiac health study in Dallas. Results showed that higher urinary potassium levels were strongly associated with lower blood pressure. Dr. Susan Hedayati, the lead author of the study, stated: "As urinary and dietary potassium levels decreased, blood pressure levels correspondingly increased, providing strong evidence of potassium's significant effect on blood pressure compared to sodium."
Additionally, Dr. Hedayati mentioned that the study is particularly important for African Americans, adding: "Our study included a high percentage of African Americans, who are known to consume low amounts of potassium in their diets. Alongside the need to reduce salt intake, those concerned about high blood pressure should consume foods high in potassium." It is worth noting that potassium-rich foods include fruits like bananas and citrus fruits, and increasing the consumption of such foods in the diet can lead to a significant reduction in blood pressure levels.
