Followers of artist Owais Makhlati criticized him after he posted photos on his Instagram account from the condolence for Hatem Ali, held in Dubai, where he appeared smiling.
Critics attacked Makhlati for taking photos during the mourning ceremony as if it was a photoshoot. Makhlati commented on the pictures he posted with a backdrop of the late artist: “We could not stand by your pure body in the process of carrying you out for your final scene in your homeland... but your beautiful spirit that accompanied us at your condolence here in the United Arab Emirates proved that you, your works, your history, your art, and your love as well as the people's love for you will never leave us and will never separate us.” He added: “Mercy to your pure soul, Hatem Ali, and patience and solace to us and to everyone, family and friends... with special thanks to those who organized this condolence and helped in reuniting us, Klaket Media.”
