Russia Achieves Victory Over Ukraine in Chess

Russian Arkady Dvorkovich retained his position as President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) after being re-elected at the organization's General Assembly conference held in Chennai, India. Dvorkovich received 157 votes, surpassing his Ukrainian competitor Andriy Baryshpolits, who received only 16 votes. Meanwhile, Belarusian Einalbek Sheripov withdrew from the elections for health reasons last Tuesday, while French Beshar Goutli announced his refusal to run for the presidency during the General Assembly. Indian Viswanathan Anand, the fifteenth world chess champion, will serve as Vice President. After his re-election, Dvorkovich said, "Thank you very much to everyone for the support. I would like to thank my team members and all the people who have helped us during this time. I value every vote and the fact that you supported the positive program that we have drafted for (FIDE) and that we have previously tried and are trying to implement over the past years. We look forward to working with each one of you in the next four years. It is a great honor, privilege, and joy for me to work for you as one team and one family. Thank you."
