Samsung is set to unveil its Galaxy S 2022 lineup on February 9, which will be partially made from a new, more sustainable material. The company announced on Sunday that it has begun using plastic made from discarded fishing nets in its latest devices. It added that it will first integrate the material into products announced this week before eventually using it across its entire range of devices.
This move is part of a broader plan by Samsung, as it seeks to address the issue of plastic waste thrown into the oceans, including plastic bottles, grocery bags, microplastics, and abandoned nets that concern marine biologists. Among all the plastic waste that ends up in the oceans, old fishing nets remain one of the greatest threats to marine life, as they break down into very small particles, posing a disaster to marine ecosystems. This concern has been a focus for Samsung in the manufacturing of its new phones, according to Yahoo Finance, which was reviewed by Al Arabiya.net.
It is estimated that fishing nets contribute more than 640,000 tons of environmental disaster each year. Samsung is not the first company to integrate recycled waste into its devices. Last year, Microsoft announced a computer mouse made from 20% recycled plastic.
