In addition to medication, healthy nutrition plays an important role in treating inflammatory diseases, as foods rich in omega-3 and phytochemicals help suppress inflammation. Dr. Matthias Riedel explained that inflammation accompanies chronic diseases such as rheumatic diseases (like gout), osteoporosis, and skin diseases (like neurodermatitis and psoriasis).
Obesity Increases Inflammation Risk
The German internist mentioned that individuals suffering from obesity have an increased risk of inflammatory processes, as abdominal fat secretes hormones that promote inflammation. Riedel noted that certain foods exacerbate inflammatory diseases, such as animal products and sugary and fatty foods like pastries, sweets, and fast food.
Omega-3
In her turn, German nutritionist Sara Morschtet pointed out that certain foods have anti-inflammatory effects, particularly those rich in omega-3. Sources include avocados, flaxseed oil, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, and fatty fish like herring, mackerel, and salmon. Morschtet added that phytochemicals such as flavonoids and carotenoids also help to suppress inflammation. Therefore, green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale are good choices, along with berries, apples, grapes, tomatoes, peppers, grapefruit, garlic, onions, turmeric, and ginger, especially in their natural form.
