UNRWA: Palestine Sees Positive Sign from U.S. President Joe Biden

Matthias Schmale, the Director of Operations at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Gaza, stated that debts and dues amounting to $70 million for this year's budget have been postponed, impacting the delivery of assistance and services.

This situation has led Schmale to perceive a positive sign from U.S. President Joe Biden regarding funding and the resumption of relations. Schmale revealed that there is a deficit of about 500 positions in UNRWA, primarily related to education and health programs, and these positions will remain vacant under the current conditions and funding shortages. He added that the COVID-19 pandemic is showing a downward and positive trend due to collective efforts, and mentioned that the agency has requested vaccinations for all residents of the sector, which is experiencing a humanitarian disaster on all levels. He noted that vaccines will be available in mid-February and priority will be given to frontline workers.
