UK: 6 Candidates Advance to First Round of Voting for Conservative Leadership

The British Conservative Party announced that six candidates remain in the race for the position of Prime Minister following the first round of voting on Wednesday. The party stated that Chancellor of the Exchequer Nadhim Zahawi and former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt have been eliminated from the contest, while former Chancellor Rishi Sunak leads the candidate list with the support of 88 Conservative MPs, followed by Penny Mordaunt with the backing of 67 MPs. Polls indicate they are the most popular among party members who will decide who will lead the party and the government on September 5.
