Dr. Andrei Ovfimtsov, a surgeon and specialist in vascular diseases and trauma, discusses the importance of keeping feet warm. What are the dangers of cold feet? The specialist mentioned in a talk with Sputnik Radio that exposure of the lower extremities to cold poses a real danger to human health, as it can lead to joint inflammation. He states, "Cooling the feet negatively affects the joint membrane, which can later be accompanied by pain and limited movement of the legs. A person may develop arthritis, and even joint deformities can occur."
He adds that prolonged exposure to cold feet negatively impacts the state of blood vessels as well. "Long-term exposure of the feet to cold adversely affects the walls of the arteries and can cause inflammation. This is followed by the appearance of minute injuries in the vessels and changes in their inner walls, leading to plaque accumulation and, consequently, a disruption in blood supply that can result in inflammation and skin diseases, including necrosis, when exposed to the cold for a long time."
The doctor advises to avoid these risks by keeping the feet warm. He says, "Feet and lower extremities can be warmed by wearing thermal clothing, special socks, and leather boots lined with fur. Generally, they can be heated with anything that provides warmth or retains body heat. With the help of these clothes and items, a comfortable temperature for the joints and blood vessels can be maintained. It is also essential, when staying outside for a long time, to keep moving and not stand still."
