Appointment of Jan Kubis as UN Special Envoy in Libya

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Slovak diplomat Jan Kubis as his special envoy to Libya and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.

The UN press office issued a statement today saying: "UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced today (Monday) the appointment of Slovak Jan Kubis (68 years old) as his special envoy to Libya and head of the UN Support Mission in Libya." The UN Security Council approved the appointment of Jan Kubis, the UN representative in Lebanon, as the new UN envoy to Libya last Friday. Kubis takes over from Bulgarian Nikolay Mladenov, who announced his resignation at the end of December for "family reasons." Kubis has served as the UN special coordinator in Lebanon since January 2019, and previously headed the UN mission in Iraq from 2015 to 2018 and in Afghanistan from 2011 to 2015. He also served as Foreign Minister of Slovakia from 2006 to 2009 and as Secretary-General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe from 1999 to 2005.
