Expert: Why You Should Not Breathe Through Your Mouth While Sleeping

Breathing provides the body with oxygen and allows us to release carbon dioxide. Typically, we use our noses to breathe; however, problems such as nasal congestion may lead many to breathe through their mouths, especially during sleep. Indian nutritionist Pooja Makija stated in a post on Instagram that mouth breathing in children can result in various harms such as dental misalignment, congenital deformities, and growth problems. For adults, it can cause bad breath, gum issues, and exacerbate symptoms of various diseases. Additionally, breathing through the mouth while sleeping may lead to snoring, hoarseness, waking up tired, chronic fatigue, as well as dark circles around the eyes and brain fog.

According to Pooja, mouth breathing may contribute to the development of several chronic diseases including chronic allergies, seasonal rhinitis, sinusitis, asthma, and anxiety. Pooja suggested some methods to improve nasal breathing, such as taking high-quality vitamin C supplements, curcumin to alleviate sinus congestion, zinc-rich foods, and dietary supplements. She advised consulting with your nutritionist regarding the appropriate dosages and duration of these supplements to avoid any potential harm, as reported by the Indian Express.
