The Egyptian Ministry of Awqaf issued a strict warning to mosque administrations against holding the Tahajjud prayer, stating that those responsible will face termination of service. This warning is part of the ministry's precautionary measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ministry stated in a post on its official Facebook page: "Tahajjud prayer is not allowed in mosques, and those who permit or participate in it will face termination from the Awqaf." The ministry urged people to perform Tahajjud in their homes.
Two weeks ago, the ministry had already issued a warning against holding i'tikaf or providing meals in mosques or their annexes. It stated, "We will take strict legal action against any individual or group that deviates from these instructions, as such deviation is a violation of public order and endangers people's lives."
The Awqaf allows the performance of Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan under specific conditions that include observing social distancing and other measures to ensure the health of worshippers.
