The Governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon, Riad Salameh, stated that "the era of fixing the exchange rate of the Lebanese lira to the US dollar has ended, and we are moving towards a floating exchange rate determined by the market."
He emphasized that the central bank supported the Lebanese economy, which was on the brink of collapse, noting that some wealthy Lebanese managed to withdraw large sums and send them abroad, while citizens are only able to withdraw limited amounts. In this context, Salameh denied using "fake companies" to manage his properties abroad, considering himself a victim of a campaign of personal attacks aimed at making him a scapegoat for the crisis, stressing that he currently has no plans to resign. Lebanon has been experiencing an economic collapse since last year, coinciding with an unprecedented drop in the value of the lira.
