Shocking video footage emerged on social media in India showing stray dogs eating the bodies of COVID-19 patients at Kedar Ghat along the banks of the Bhagirathi River in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand. Local residents stated that parts of the corpses, some half-burnt, had washed up on the shore after rising water levels in the Bhagirathi due to rainfall over the past few days. One local resident mentioned that while he was painting yesterday, he saw these half-burnt bodies and stray dogs gnawing on them. He added that the local administration and municipality should pay attention to this and take immediate action. He also expressed that it is concerning and described it as a death of humanity. Echoing similar sentiments, another local resident noted that there is a possibility that the corpses belong to individuals infected with COVID-19 who had been cremated, urging civil defense authorities to take immediate measures to prevent the spread of infection. Meanwhile, Mayor Ramesh Smawal stated that after receiving complaints from locals, they assigned someone in Kedar Ghat to burn the half-burnt bodies that had been washed ashore. Earlier, similar incidents were reported in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where a large number of corpses were found floating in the Ganges River. However, last month, the central government directed authorities in these states to prevent the disposal of bodies in the river.
