The Israeli newspaper "Times of Israel" reported that Israeli police have significant suspicions that prison guards assisted in the escape of six prisoners from Gilboa Prison. The newspaper, citing a report from the news site "Kan News," stated that police have information indicating increasing suspicion that prison staff helped the six inmates flee from Gilboa. The report also mentioned that two prison guards will be interrogated today, Thursday.
This comes amid reports from activists that the Israeli Prison Service has reversed its decision to transfer inmates associated with Islamic Jihad from their prisons to other facilities. Meanwhile, clashes erupted between Palestinian prisoners and guards in several Israeli prisons, with fires set in sections housing prisoners from the Islamic Jihad movement in the "Ketziot" prison in the Negev and "Ramôn" prison in central Israel. The leadership of the prisoners has threatened to set the prisons on fire if an attempt is made to transfer Islamic Jihad inmates.
A spokesperson for Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett stated that he conducted an assessment of the situation with the participation of the defense minister, the head of the prison service, and several heads of security agencies, in light of the recent events in the prisons. The spokesperson added that Bennett emphasized that "these events could affect several areas, and therefore all security agencies are making joint efforts in this regard, and Israel is 'prepared for all scenarios.'" He noted that the Prime Minister is being updated on the latest developments and will conduct further consultations as needed.
