A Threat to Heart Health!

A new study has reported that 9 out of 10 people do not sleep well at night, and poor sleep is associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. The research, presented at the European Society of Cardiology 2022 conference in Barcelona, estimated that 7 out of 10 cardiovascular disease cases could be prevented with good sleep. The study was conducted by Professor Aboubakari Nambiema from the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research in Paris, who stated, "Good sleep rates are expected to decline due to busy lifestyles." He called for awareness about sleep duration and its role in ensuring heart health early in life.

According to "Science Daily," the research highlighted the potential to improve sleep rates by reducing nighttime noise and minimizing work-related stress. The study involved 7,200 participants from the Future Paris cohort, which is an observational study monitoring community behaviors. The average age of participants was 59.7 years, with 62% being men. Over 8 years, participants underwent physical examinations and provided data on lifestyle, personal, and family medical history. Information was gathered on 5 sleep habits, measuring hours of sleep and assessing its impact on heart health.

The findings revealed that those who sleep between 7 and 8 hours each night, do not suffer from insomnia or excessive daytime sleepiness, and wake up in the morning are the least likely to have coronary heart disease. The research concluded that if all study participants enjoyed ideal sleep, 72% of heart disease cases could be avoided.
