There are claims that Himalayan pink salt reduces feelings of hunger during fasting compared to regular table salt. Is this true, and how does it happen?
Pink salt is extracted from the Salt Range mountains in the Himalayas, and it gains its pink or peach color due to its high concentration of beneficial minerals.
Compared to table salt, pink salt contains a higher percentage of calcium, potassium, magnesium, and iron, while having a slightly lower percentage of sodium. Therefore, it is better for high blood pressure and heart health overall.
**How does it affect fasting?**
During long hours of fasting, the body loses minerals and electrolytes, especially sodium, which leads to increased thirst, energy drops, and feelings of hunger. Pink salt helps mitigate these effects and allows the faster to feel less hungry because it provides these minerals.
For fasting periods of 12 to 16 hours, the body compensates for lost minerals during the breaking of the fast. This can be supported by adding a sprinkle of extra salt, or using mineral-rich pink salt.
