Endocrinologist and nutritionist Dr. Oleg Erishkin has announced that water deficiency in the body can lead to negative health consequences. He points out that there are signs to be attentive to in order to avoid dehydration. It is essential to monitor water balance in the body at all ages, especially as one ages. He states, "In youth, we feel the deficiency of water in the body well, but as we age, a person feels this deficiency less. Therefore, the elderly must pay attention to water balance, which includes everyone over the age of 65."
He adds that water deficiency in the body increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes, as dehydration causes an increase in blood coagulation. This means that individuals with cardiovascular diseases should be mindful of their body’s water balance. Erishkin notes that signs of water deficiency in the body include fatigue, weakness, and headaches. The color of urine can also indicate water deficiency. He explains, "Fatigue, weakness, headaches, and discomfort are signs of dehydration. The darker the urine, the more obvious the dehydration. If the urine color is straw-colored, it indicates that everything is fine."
He adds that to compensate for water deficiency in the body, one can consume any drink such as tea and juices. However, it should be noted that juices contain high sugar levels, making this option less ideal, especially for individuals with diabetes or obesity. If a person wishes to drink coffee, they should be cautious as it is a diuretic; therefore, it is recommended to drink a glass of water with a cup of coffee.
According to him, the temperature of the water we drink is also important. Cold water is absorbed by the body slowly, while warm water is absorbed quickly. Therefore, it is better to drink water at room temperature.
